The Murray crayfish is a vulnerable native species found in the upper Murrumbidgee, and little is known about the flows and habitat it needs. This project studies how the species moves, behaves and uses habitat, and how this relates to flow. Crayfish are tracked with acoustic tags to follow their movement, dispersal and activity, alongside assessment of the habitat they prefer and the threats they face.
The findings will define the flows and habitat the species needs, so these can be built into decisions about environmental flows and river recovery, addressing a significant gap in what is currently known.
